양자 다체 계산 이론 연구실(이승섭 교수)에서 학생 연구원(학부생 인턴, 석사/박사/통합 대학원생)을 모집합니다.
저희 연구실에서는 강상관 전자계, 중성원자계, 양자 프로세서 등에서 나타나는 양자 다체 현상을 텐서 네트워크(tensor networks), 동적 평균장 이론(dynamical mean-field theory; DMFT) 등의 양자 다체 계산 이론을 이용하여 연구하고 있습니다. 저희 분야는 지수적(exponential)으로 큰 계산량을 획기적으로 줄이는 여러 물리 방법론의 개발, 그리고 컴퓨터 성능의 향상에 힘입어, 응집물질물리 및 양자물리의 여러 난제를 해결해오고 있습니다.
현재 연구실에서 진행하고 있는 연구는 크게 다음의 4가지로 분류할 수 있습니다. 주제 1–3은 물리 연구, 주제 4는 이를 위한 소프트웨어 개발에 주안점을 두고 있습니다.
여러 강상관 전자계(훈트 금속, 무거운 페르미온, 무아레 물질 등)에서 나타나는 양자 물성을 정밀한 다체 이론 기법으로 탐구.
양자 프로세서 및 양자 시뮬레이터를 고전 컴퓨터로 에뮬레이션하고, 이를 바탕으로 하는 양자-고전 하이브리드 알고리즘 연구.
텐서 네트워크와 양자장론을 결합한 새로운 양자 다체 계산 방법론 구축.
텐서 네트워크 라이브러리 및 응용 프로그램 개발.

모든 학생이 각자 최신 주제를 맡아서 주도적으로 연구를 수행하며, 이승섭 교수가 주 1~2회 이상 직접 ("사수"를 통하지 않고) 연구를 지도합니다. 1주일에 2~3시간짜리 그룹 미팅이 1번 있으며, 학생이 원하는 경우 개별 미팅을 가지고 있습니다.
세계 유수의 기관과 공동 연구할 수 있습니다. (현재 공동 연구 기관: 독일 뮌헨대, 독일 막스플랑크 고체 연구소, 미국 플랫아이언 연구소, 오스트리아 빈 공대, 일본 도쿄대, 중국 북경대)
국제 학회 참석 및 발표를 권장하며, 출장비 지원합니다.
생활비, 등록금 등을 걱정하지 않고 연구에 집중하도록 인건비를 지급합니다. (자연대 학부생 인턴십 장학금, 대학원생 BK 장학금 등과는 별도로 지급합니다.)
56동 4층 또는 5층의 오피스 사용 가능하며, 노트북 및 모니터 등 지원합니다.
총 2,800 코어 이상(증설 예정)의 클러스터 사용 가능합니다.
상기 사항은 학부생에게도 적용됩니다. 실제로 국제 공동 연구를 주도적으로 진행하면서, 해외 학회에도 참석하는 학부생 인턴이 있습니다.
박사까지 밟거나, 석사 후 연구원으로 재직 시 전문연구요원 복무 가능합니다.
최신 이론 연구를 수행하는 특성 상, 다음의 조건을 만족해야 합니다.
학부 수준의 양자역학과 선형대수학에 능숙할 것.
주제 1–3에 지망하는 경우: 대학원 수준의 양자역학이나 양자 다체 이론을 알면 좋긴 하나, 필수는 아닙니다. 와서 배우면 됩니다.
주제 4에 지망하는 경우: 소프트웨어 개발에 필요한 능력 및 경력. C++, MATLAB, Julia 등을 잘 알면 좋습니다.
학부생의 경우: 주도적으로 연구를 진행해야 하기 때문에, 1년 이상 연구 참여가 가능해야 합니다. 대학원에 진학하여 저희 연구실 활동을 지속할 학생을 우선적으로 선발합니다.

We are looking for students at all academic levels, to join a "computational quantum many-body theory" group led by Prof. Seung-Sup Lee.
We study interesting phenomena in various quantum many-body systems, ranging from strongly correlated electrons to cold atoms to quantum processors, by using computational methods such as tensor networks and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The field of computational quantum many-body theory has observed great advances in recent decades, contributing to solving the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics and quantum physics. Such advances benefit from the development of physics-based methodologies—that reduce the exponentially large computational costs for brute-force approaches—as well as from improved computer hardware and software.
Current research topics in the group can be categorized into the following four. Topics 1–3 are more on physics research, while Topic 4 focuses on software development.
Explore the novel properties of various strongly correlated electronic systems (e.g., Hund metals, heavy fermions, Moiré materials) by using precision many-body techniques.
Classically emulate quantum processors and quantum simulators by using tensor networks. Develop quantum-classical hybrid algorithms inspired by the tensor-network emulation.
Build a new, powerful quantum many-body method that combines tensor networks and quantum field theory.
Software development: tensor network library and its applications.

Every student takes a leading role in cutting-edge research and is directly supervised by Prof. Lee, through weekly group meetings (2–3 hours per week) and, if they want, individual meetings.
Students can collaborate with world-leading institutions. Current list of collaborators: Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (Germany), Flatiron Institute (USA), TU Wien (Austria), University of Tokyo (Japan), Peking University (China).
We encourage students to attend and give presentations (poster or oral) at international conferences, and of course, travel expenses are supported.
Every student is paid a salary that can cover living costs and tuition fees, in addition to the scholarship from the university (e.g., BK scholarship).
Every student can have their own desk in an office on the 4th or 5th floor at Building 56. We also provide laptops and displays.
Students can use a computing cluster having more than 2,800 cores (to be further upgraded).
All the benefits above also apply to Bachelor students; indeed, we have a Bachelor student who leads an international collaboration and participates in international conferences.
To conduct cutting-edge theoretical research, applicants must meet the following conditions.
An applicant should be fluent in quantum mechanics and linear algebra at the undergraduate level.
If interested in Topics 1–3: Knowledge of graduate-level quantum mechanics or quantum many-body theory is a plus, but not required; they can learn after joining the group.
If interested in Topic 4: An applicant should have skills and experience in software development. Familiarity with C++, MATLAB, Julia, etc. is a plus.
For Bachelor students: An applicant should be able to focus on research for a year or longer.
